Santa Ana teacher charged for bringing gun to class

April 29th, 2008, 5:14 pm · 1 Comment · posted by Rachanee Srisavasdi

Prosecutors today charged a Santa Ana elementary school teacher with child endangerment for keeping a gun in her classroom.

Jayne Suzanne DeArmond, 51, Costa Mesa, is charged with one felony count of possession of a firearm on school grounds and one felony count of child endangerment by a caretaker.

DeArmond was arrested after allegedly keeping a gun in a third-grade classroom at Diamond Elementary in Santa Ana on April 2. Authorities say she stored the gun and bullets in a plastic supply drawer with other classroom supplies and within reach of her young students. Students found the gun while looking for a staple remover.

DeArmond will be arraigned on the charges Wednesday. Prosecutors say she faces a maximum sentence of six years and four months in state prison if convicted.

  • Columbine says:

If Jayne Suzanne DeArmond should be convicted for carrying a gun, authorities in Columbine should have thought about this about a decade ago and sent youngsters from its campus to juvenile hall. She didn’t threaten any lives and there were so many lives lost in Columbine
