Kobe Bryant reports for jury duty

March 18th, 2009, 9:05 am · 30 Comments · posted by Larry Welborn

The Lakers are in a tight battle for the best record in the NBA and home court advantage throughout the playoffs, but that did not prevent Kobe Bryant from fulfilling his civic responsibility.

He showed up this morning as scheduled for jury duty in the Central Justice Center in Santa Ana and took a seat in the jury assembly room along with about 200 other potential jurors.

Bryant has lived in Orange County for years, and his status as one of the greatest basketball players alive apparently did not exempt him from getting a jury summons.

It is actually business as usual in jury assembly, except that a deputy sheriff is stationed at the door to prevent non-jurors from entering.

Court authorities said Bryant is being treated just like any other potential juror and must go through the process.

Carol Levitzky, spokeswoman for Superior Court, said that system usually works with potential jurors to accomodate important work schedules.

And judges often excuse folks from jury duty when they explain that they are desperately needed on the job or that the business can’t possibily get along without them.

I can just hear Kobe now:

”Your Honor, I’d like to serve, but I kind of  have an important event coming up tomorrow. We’re playing Golden State at the Staples Center.”

I got jury summons twice to the Santa Ana Justice Center and I hated it. It was boring and a big waist of time!!!. I think they should call up people who dont have jobs, heck maybe a bum or two but leave working people out of it.

  • faith says:

People need to get over the alleged rape and move on, just as Kobe has and the alleged victim. I’m sure none of you have done any thing wrong or been accused of something that you didn’t do. God forgives and remembers no more; so should you.

  • Joe Blake says:

I served my jury duty today as well. Really. Didn’t see him. Maybe I just didn’t notice him?

  • Jason says:

Lets all remember that Mr. Bryant was never convicted of any alleged crime. Secondly, the alleged crime was not prosecuted here in California, thereby, has no relevance to his selection for jury duty. Possibly in CO, not here in CA. Third because of his past ignorance does that suggest thats hes incapable of being fair. Does his dubious past actions suggest that he Bryant has no feelings, no sensibility, and presents no knowledge of right from wrong. Thats like saying that none of us should serve jury duty for a case that involves vehicular manslaughter, for all of us are guilty of being unsafe and unwise drivers.

Im sure that any case involving rape, he Mr. Bryant would voluntarily step aside without asking if he may be dismissed. Not to mention that his notoriety is on the line, and is susceptible to criticism either way he goes. So whats it to any of us at this point…nothing more than another story for narrow minded rhetoric.

I appreciate that Kobe is at least honoring his role whether he has one or not. As for the $ 5 dollar an hour pay, Im sure he would gladly return it, respectfully.

  • ocmomoftwo says:

I’m still waiting for the part where this is news…..?

Well at least he’s doing his civic duty and unlike others he’s proud to report. Stop hating! Instead of replying to those stupid comments and hating on Kobe try reporting for jury. Good job Kobe!
