Bogus Benjamins could lead to prison

What do you get if you try to buy a Marilyn Monroe photo, some mugs and a gift certificate with counterfeit $100 bills?

It could be as much as three to six years in prison for Griselda Meras Najera, 23, of El Monte.

She was convicted by an Orange County Superior Court jury of six felony counts of commerical burglary and counterfeiting.

Witnesses testified she tried to pass the bogus Benjamins (Benjamin Franklin’s picture is on the $100 bill) during a shopping spree at three stores inside Downtown Disney on Dec. 14, 2007.  But her bills seemed to be of a different weight and texture than the real deal and she was busted.

A Secret Service agent testified during her trial in the Santa Ana courthouse that security marks and other features were off on Najera’s funny money, said Deputy District Attorney Dominic Bello.

After the jury returned with guilty verdicts late Tuesday, Superior Court Judge M. Marc Kelly took Najera into custody pending her sentencing July 28.
