Ticketed for doing 210 mph on the toll road? Not quite.

July 16th, 2009, 4:33 pm · 43 Comments · posted by Andrew Galvin

Did a San Marcos man get caught speeding at 210 mph in his Bugatti Veyron on the 73 toll road in Aliso Viejo?

The question was raised earlier this week by Jalopnik.com, a site for car lovers, after this image of a speeding ticket was reportedly posted on the Web by someone named Philip Robert Odegard.

The partially obscured image purports to show that Odegard, 22, a self-described technology evangelist and entrepreneur, was caught driving a $1.4 million Bugatti at “210+” mph in the early hours of July 1.

But a call to the California Highway Patrol reveals the image is a fake.

In fact, Odegard was ticketed on April 1 for traveling 100 mph at the same location on the toll road, according to CHP officer Chris Goodwin.

Odegard was driving a 2004 Infiniti, not a 2008 Bugatti, Goodwin said.

Odegard couldn’t be reached for comment.

OCR, why does this make Front Page. It is a Hoax, confirmed by the CHP. The Headline is a fabrication by you and actually vetted by the OCR for print….un believable how low you guys will go….

    • HarleyJazz says:

IMACOBRU: It’s not on the front page of the paper. It appears on the home page, You believe that because it is on the Home page view that it is Front Page news. In my opinion it never has been a REAL front page and most likely never will.

  • digitaldude says:

Exactly what vehicle would the CHP have used to catch and stop a violator traveling at 210 mph anyway (even if the event was true)? A bullet’s about the only thing I can think of that would travel fast enough to make that kind of traffic stop.

If you go to the web page mentioned in the above article, there are a lot of people that were not fooled. Unless the kid was extremely stupid, and at that speed he is really 5150, how would he get a ticket and not a booking number?

Think for a moment, your in your M.O.P. (mobile observation platform) watching the radar lights. Zoom, 210 mph lights up. You now have to accelerate to what? Match his speed? Go faster then he is to over take him? Son, unless you’re in a NASCAR racer, you’ll never in hell catch up to him. When you get up to your max speed in the old Ford, the 210+ car will be off the toll road. At that time in the morning, there may not be any assistance from your 7-11 coffee drinking buddies to hop on the freeway to catch him when he slows down.

Figure how much road he travels in the 30 seconds it takes a CHP car to max out their speed of what, 135 mph on a good day? At 60 mph that is one mile a minute, or one half mile in 30 seconds. At 210 mph that is 3.5 miles a minute, or .0583 miles a second. In ten seconds he covered a half mile. In the 30 seconds it takes to max out the patrol car, he has gone maybe 1.8 miles and getting farther?

Fake ticket! Stunt to get his name in print.

how the hobb did the CHP catch and ticket a Bugatti? not that the guy can’t afford to blow this off.

  • jt says:

    a 2004 Infiniti !!!….how beneath him!

  • rdeight says:

Remember Rodney King’s 115-mph Hyundai? A Bugatti doesn’t go that fast even on a track, and if it could, it would have left the road.

  • mytmyk says:

210 mph is very believable with a Bugatti. It’s stated to do 248 mph right out of the factory and has been clocked at over 250 mph on the Ottobon. It’s one of the finest machines on the road.

  • Uncle Rom says:

How much do they pay at the OC Register for articles like these? I need a job. I was thinking about posting my tweets.

  • NewWorldOrder says:

It’s a human interest story…sorry if it doesn’t meet the high standards of the bourgeois news hungry, grammatically exceptional, and linguistically snobbish readers who have nothing better to do than b!tch and whine every chance they get here.

It was a light Friday read and I didn’t ask for much from the headline. Duh.

  • dan says:

And you know what is really funny, is that Al Gore’s son was cited for going the same speed (I think it was 106) in the City of Orange in his PRIUS (and he got a DUI and a felony for illegal prescription drugs).

I never figured out why I was guilty for doing an unsafe speed (80mph) on highway 395, when the officer had to do at least 120 after he went to a undevided section and did a U TURN on the freeway to catch up with me. It was unsafe for me to do 80mph without another car within 5 miles of me (on my side), but safe for him to do 120????

    • kb says:

cuz he’s trained and ur not, he knows that stretch of the road like the back of his hand and you dont. and its his job to enforce the vehicle code

    • FedUpWithIt says:

Dan- 80 mph is not unsafe on much of 395, especially by Manzanar (flat straightaways) or Red Rock Canyon. I’m with you buddy.

  • kb says:

if he was really going 200+ and they actually caught up to him, he’d most likely be taking a trip to jail, you could tack on reckless driving, and maybe even exhibition of speed and a few other violations.

  • edv says:

I don’t think you can do 210 on the 73 anyway, because of all the hills and lack of straight-aways.

  • Nonsense says:

One time I said of OCR=Only Confusing Readers, it’s always true then and now. This story confirms how OCR is going to lose customers, like me.

  • john says:

wow, are people seriously still speculating about this story?? this kid now looks like an idiot and a loser (not that he wasn’t before)

  • Eliz says:

Is this really worth writing about, huh OCR?

  • yaright says:

lol, if you got caight doing over 200mph you wouldnt be able to blog about it because youd be in jail till youre trial for wreckless driving and endagerment

  • BeerGoggles949 says:

Such BS if he had been caught it would not have just been a ticket
He would have been arrested for Wreckless Endangerment not given a ticket to walk away with This Jacka$% isn’t impressive with a Buggati or a Infinity This guy should be arrested for being a JERK

  • Naptown says:

I guess this qualifies as news since there wasn’t any killing(s) in Santa Ana.

  • tom says:

  • RC says:

Actually a CHP officer does not need to match anyones speed on the Toll Road. All speeds are matched by a simple surveilance camera set up every half mile or so, at every entrance and exit point. The only way to elude the cams is to remove your license plate, and lower your sun viser.. Secondly patrol cars are mechanically configured with a supper charge. Remember that government vehicles used for law enforcement purposes, are modified so that they can outstand most high speed situations.

I highly doubt that an officer had caught up to this vehicle with out having been in motion. However, a camera is all an officer would need. Pay a vist to Toll Roads in Irvine, request to view video footage…and whalah, we got our guy. Lets also not exempt the fact that toll cams are state of the art technology, where zooming in on an object, is not that difficult. Now officers run the plate number, retain owner information with DMV match, and again they got their man. Another note to consider is that in some instances, these cams may be fitted with radars. Thereby, matching recorded speeds will not compromise any possible investigation. The Tolls Roads do possess radars in various locations.

Goes to show that very minuute drivers possess any real road knowledge. Oh well.

  • RC says:

Also in reference to arresting a driver for excessive speeds. If an officer is able to apprehend you on the scene, sure they would. However, if officers were unsuccessful in stopping the driver, than comes the question as to whether they ( CHP ) would be able to make an arrest there after the fact, If they are unable to retrieve a clear picture of the drivers profile. Probably not. However, that doesnt prevent them from mailing via certified mail, a fat aus ticket.

A license plate is much more clearer to view, than a zoomed in picture of an obstructed driver, despite the quality of the technology.

Which means that arrest is not always emminent though the goal if at all possible.

For those of you familiar with San Marcos, if the kid had enough $ to buy a $1.4M car, he wouldn’t be living in San Marcos.

210 is a hook & book, not a ticket and the car goes away for 30 days. I could see the conversation in the unit right now, Officer A: “Where did he go?” Officer B: “Where did who go?” Like digitaldude said, what could they have caught him with? Radar him on the 73 and wait for him to stop in what, Long Beach?
